Ewing Galloway (1881 – 1953) ran the Ewing Galloway Agency, an archive of images by numerous photographers whose work was reproduced in books, magazines, textbooks and encyclopedias. Originally a lawyer, Galloway was drawn to journalism, and took a series of newspaper jobs in the Midwest, California, Hawaii and Kentucky. In New York, he became the photo editor for “Colliers,” and then opened his own photographic agency, initially stocking it with 8,000 images of Africa and Asia. Although he only learned how to use a camera later in life, he provided historic insights into everyday life, transportation, familiar locations and commerce through his agency’s photos.
