Ford Smith is a visionary artist whose works, reminiscent of an Asian aesthetic, use textures, shapes and color to infuse his work with subtlety and tranquility. Smith’s technique is as unique as his results: layering dripping, flowing acrylic paints which find their own expression, texturized with scattered granules of plaster. During the late 1970s and 80s, Smith, who learned to paint in Japan, was Atlanta’s most prominent fashion photographer. Compelled to return to painting, he traveled to seek inspiration, and gravitated to landscapes with exquisite horizons. Although he has a background in photography, Smith never paints from a photograph.
