Bleu II

Utilizing blue as a symbol of artistic creation and spiritual purity, Spanish Surrealist Joan Miro (1893 – 1983) painted his enormous “Bleu II,” part of a three-part-series, which he said was the culmination of everything he had done until that point. Drawn to unconventional techniques, Miro utilized the psychic automatism method of freeform drawing dictated by impulses of the subconscious, creating amorphous shapes, lines, curlicues and bursts of color. Deeply connected to his heritage, much of his symbolism relates to the Catalan culture, though his art now epitomizes all that is free and spontaneous in Surrealist art.
