Fernando Botero
“Bath” illustrates Fernando Botero’s penchant for over-inflated forms which both celebrate and satirize his subject. Botero, whose work emulates fleshy 17th century Baroque figures, believes that “art is deformation” using his swollen figures to carry political and social commentary, targeting symbols of power and authority. Born in Colombia, he had his first exhibition when he was only 19—and every piece sold. In 1969, Botero’s worldwide reputation was solidified through his successful solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York
